As a slow starter in driving a car, the last one year i am mostly commuting to office in my car. Eventhough sometimes I think it as a luxury, once used to it, then you will think twice before take your motor bike. The perks of driving in a car includes protection from heat and dust along with some good musicc from your music player.
All these days I am noticing some unusual behaviour of our drivers. People even doesn't know why they are honking the horns.They do it even when there is no necessity. When you stop for Red signal, somebody from the back will honk that makes you to do an obnoxious gesture at them. People at motor bikes will cut y
ou over and stop in front of you. Almost everybody wants to overtake others even when there is not enough space to overtake. Auto and Share autos will do extreme sports at roads in overtakings. If we need to promote F1 in India, bring some chennai auto drivers to the circuits.
Since the metro rail works are in full swing, there are few changes made to the routes. These changes are mostly well thought through to avoid clogging of traffic. But still in few places, they can change few routes. I can see most of the four road junctions are unnecessary. The cut roads which are meeting the main bus routes need not be given a straight through crossing to the bus routes unless the cut roads are meant for buses and heavy vehicles. Vehicles coming through these roads should take a left turn in the main raod and should be given a U turn after a considerable distance.
When I am driving in the 100 feet road from koyambedu to Ekkatuthangal, I can see many small roads given a four road crossing in the 100 feet road.
Next thing is parking irritations. In many important roads, people park their vehicles without even thinking once. Regulating parking will clear a fair amount of traffic woes.
Similarly few areas should be provided with only mini bus service or share auto service instead of regular bus service. For example, MMDA colony, Mogappair and Nolambur roads are not suitable for regular bus traffic. instead if they provide exclusive share auto service for these areas from the main roads will improve the traffic conditions.
When the new metro stations are going to be in operation very soon, the auto fare menace will go to a new high. All auto drivers going to get affected because of the metro rail service. And they are going to charge heavily for even a small distance from metro stations. To avoid this, there should be share auto permits should be given based on each metro stations to operate to the nearest localities. Make the metro stations as hub for share autos to surrounding localities. I dont see there are enough parking spaces near metro stations. By providing enough parking facilites in each metro station, we can avoid few more vehicle movement in the city.
About safety, I wish the driving license norms should be more rigourous. In other countries, getting a license is very tough task. Unless you follow a disciplined training and practice, its a dream to get this right. But I doubt the abilities and discipline of most of the driving population here.
When I say all these things, I keep on hearing from other state friends that chennai has big roads and drivers are with disciplined traffic sesnse. So I understand how other states are faring in traffic and driving.
