Surprisingly, this year there were too much of recruitment in campus interviews. Yet again the IT majors procured more Engineering talents. Out of 2000 + outgoing Engineers from Anna University, TCS recruited 1000 and odd students that left the other 1000 and odd students to other companies. Likewise there were more IT companies keep on hunting software students from campuses. Not only software students, students from Electrical and Electronics, Instrumentation, Civil Engineering, Chemical engineering and other streams which are not related to IT also entered into IT companies.
What these people are gonna do in next few years?
At least for first 6 months to one year, they will attend corporate training. Then they will be categorized with specific skill sets and will be distributed to many locations. Most of them will wait for any vacancy in some ongoing projects. Few lucky people will be deployed immediately in some projects. Some of the people will get a place in project as a shadow resource. A shadow resource is a back up for the project if someone quit the job in between. This is a risk mitigation plan for most of the project managers with a view to handle the increasing attrition rates in IT companies.
By the time when all the people get their first project, they will have 2 years of experience in an IT company. After getting into the project, very few people will have the work pressure in projects. Most of the projects running on with some key resources only, So, every manger will try to groom back up people for those key people. Most of the people will be in project just to bill the clients and to do the sundry works. There are very few projects that employ the perfect number of people.
If the project is a first time development project and if it has an acute deadline people will have much pressure. If the project is an implementation project or maintenance project, the work is very low compared to a first time development project. Most of the project mangers building their Gantt charts with maximum buffer time. They are preparing different plans from A to E depending on the best case scenario to worst case scenario.
I guess I am deviating from the topic… Coming back on track….
So, all these people are recruited for the future projects of the company which ‘may’ come after some years. Till then they have to wait or sitting in a project as shadow resource or as an extra luggage to bill the client.
I can see all the projects coming from developed countries are deploying more people than necessary. All those clients are getting an impression that all those people are necessary to run the projects by comparing their productivity to Indians. In fact the productivity of Indians in IT projects are very high compared to any other people. Now a days those clients also understood that some of the projects are overcrowded. But they don’t bother as long as they save one tenth or one fifth of money, by running the project in India.
If there will be a huge appreciation of Indian rupee, then everyone will start thinking about these extra resources in each project. Till then all those young engineers will get a good pay checks without much value addition to their career.
The above content will not applicable to all the projects. But 80% of the International IT projects running in India are overcrowded. But in a way we need to do that to recapture all those money swindled from us before 1947. I was thrilled to see the cost for a CR which demands 2 more values in a drop down box. It was around 2000 GBP to include that 2 drop down values. In a way I was happy to get that addition in the balance of payments. (More technical?)
This blog is born out of my frustration after I found myself as an extra luggage in one of those projects. When foreign countries need their SOX, MiFID, A Day, FISMA and other regulatory compliances, We’ll continue to enjoy this…. ???
All readers are requested not to take it very personally….
